Laurie Lipton
Her work is inspired by the detailed religious paintings of the Flemish School in the 17th century based on manuscript illumination. Paintings of this time were made in the realistic style, imitating details of materials, fabrics and textures. Lipton's artwork is also immersed in a lot of symbolism related to sciences, alchemy and religion.
With great effort and persistence, Lipton taught herself the use of the shadows, lights and colors. She developed her own technique with pencils and charcoals, matching a level that we thought only the old school great masters could achieve. By her words "Although tedious, the result was a beautiful, clear tonality and astonishing detail. It's an insane way of drawing, though." Inspired also by Diana Arbus, whose technique helped her to discover new uses and depths of black and white.
